For
the past two decades, our society has struggled to find solutions
to improve the perception and image of American youth and law
enforcement. We continue to search for effective strategies to
deal with the decline of family values, substance abuse, conflict
management, issues involving our diversity while living in a constantly
changing highly technical society. The challenges of our fast
paced and competitive twenty-first century have left us little
time to deal with eroding images and relationships. At the heart
of these challenges is a critical need to educate and communicate
in order to reduce individual stress and thereby improve personal
and professional lives.
At
JP Davis & Associates, Inc., we would like to reduce
the potential for conflict between police and youth while improving
the perception of both through an information and educational
video. We plan to distribute it nationally to community and civic
groups, youth organizations, police departments, school systems,
and churches to promote safety, mutual respect, and harmony. We
would like to invite you to be a promoter/educator in this effort.
For
the past two years, we have worked with a large metropolitan police
department gathering data to assist in the development of this
video to educate youth on proper behaviors when dealing with police.
With the attention and focus being given to racial profiling,
we are particularly interested in targeting minority youth for
an intense education effort. The video will illustrate proper
and improper behavior when being stopped by the police. It will
demonstrate movements by civilians that could be considered threatening
to police and will provide opportunity for discussion on attitudes
and behaviors that are safe practices. Participants will be real
people, not actors, of different races. Some of them will share
personal experiences and how they were handled. The video will
include vignettes designed for group or individual discussion,
will include a law enforcement perspective, and tips for both
side that will assist each in maintaining the maximum level of
safety.
The
objectives of the video are to:
1)
Increase the level of respect for authority with youth, thereby
increasing their
safety;
2) Encourage cooperation and
collaboration between youth and law enforcement;
3) Stimulate community discussion;
4) Educate the general public
on police training techniques and their safety
practices;
5) Provide a citizen perspective
of police to law enforcement personnel.
