Organizations
find themselves at various levels as it relates to the issues
of Diversity. No matter where you are in this process, the primary
dimensions of diversity are the things that inhibit awareness
and sensitivity to others. We tend to make decisions about others
based on race, age, gender, appearance, ability, etc. When we
make our decisions at the primary level, we miss the opportunity
to know people at the secondary level. Which is where we discover
that we have more in common that we do different. It is the primary
level that causes the most difficulty and creates problems in
our society.
At
JP Davis & Associates, Inc. we choose to look at this "problem"
as an elephant. The elephant represents the labels, stereotypes
and assumptions that we may have about others. What are we going
to do about it? We're going to eat it. How do you eat an elephant?
One bite at a time. Each of us has a circle of influence that
can help to bring down this elephant. Your circle of influence
is whatever part of the elephant you can reach. If you are only
as tall as the knees, knees or the ears, nibble at them consistently.
By working together, we all "eat the elephant. Our objective
in diversity development and acceptance is to acknowledge our
own biases, identify any negative perpetuating behaviors, and
choose a personal strategy to help eliminate the elephant.
Diversity
is a business and societal issue. Education is knowledge and
knowledge is power. Diversity education is a must.
